To Mission Control
From Ratho Weather Base Update
Friday, 14th December 2007.
Time 08:45 (UTC or GMT)
The ship should now be plying its way from South Georgia towards the island of Signy at a steady 10 knots on a SW heading. The weather in Signy is 48 deg F and is partly cloudy with some sunshine. Snow and sleet are forecast over the next 3 days. Sunrise is 08-36 UTC and sunset 15-27 UTC.
You will note that, even though it is the summer in the southern hemisphere, the amount of daylight at the ship is about the same as that in Edinburgh at the moment.
Rothera, on the Peninsula, has had snow overnight and has a temperature of also 48 deg F. More snow is forecast. Its daylight is from 04-27 UTC through to 16-27 UTC, exactly 12 hours.
The amount of daylight varies significantly over only fairly short distances as you get closer to the South Pole.
Further update early next week before the end of term.
