Hi to the junior school,
I'm writing this as we approach South Georgia and look out on glaciers and snowfields as we try to make out Shackleton's grave. We've had quite a rough 2 days at sea coming from the Falklands to here. The first day was pleasant and calm with sightings of many birds, the magnificent wandering albatross as well as petrels and prions, and fur seals and penguins bobbing about in the water too.
Yesterday it got much rougher and the ship was tilting 20 degrees so it was difficult to move about and to keep your food on the plate and the plate on the table at dinner time.
Anyway - your questions: it's just above freezing so we're wearing a bvest, base layer, thin fleece and fleece lined waterproof jacket with warm trousers and waterproof trousers and wellies, hat and gloves. We all look quite fat, even me!
We haven't had enough snow to build an igloo yet but we are approaching it now. We're eating a lot of fish and the food is very good, although sometimes our stomachs are a bit wobbly.
The girls entertained themselves on the sea days by doing some work and making Christmas decorations out of cans and bits of paper lying about the ship. They did a good job.
George sends his love and is enjoying this amazing adventure.
