Tuesday 11 December
"Good morning" sounds on the intercom at 5.00am, the dulcet tones of Brandon, our Canadian expedition leader, telling us the weather is good and we can make an early landing before breakfast. We get togged up in all the gear and land for a couple of hours at St Andrew's Bay, overrun with King Penguins and very few fur seals - amazing!
We were lucky with the weather as it stayed fine although there was a big swell and negotiating the jump from the zodiac back to the floating gangway on the ship proved a challenge.
A quiet morning gave us the opportunity to hear Snowy talk about his work when he spent 15 months in Antarctica on a research station - some stunning photographs too. The wind got up so we couldn't do a planned zodiac cruise along the coast but we found shelter in Gold Harbour and were able to land again - penguins galore with an imposing backdrop of hanging glaciers and vertical cliffs.
Another morning in South Georgia tomorrow and then we head for Antarctica itself! Wow!!!!
